The Department of Classical and European Studies is pleased to welcome Jacqueline Couti to Rice. Prof. Couti joined the faculty as Favrot Chair of French Studies in Fall 2018. An associate professor, she specializes in the Francophone literature of the Caribbean. Prof. Couti is the author of Dangerous Creole Liaisons: Sexuality and Nationalism in French Caribbean Discourses from 1806 to 1897 (Liverpool University Press, 2016). In addition, she has produced critical and annotated editions of two novels (L’Harmattan, 2014 and 2017). Her current book project is entitled Sex, Sea, and Self: Sexuality and Nationalism in French Caribbean Discourses 1924-1948, which is under contract with Liverpool University Press. Prof. Couti is also a highly regarded teacher; she received two teaching awards at her previous institution, the University of Kentucky. In the fall, Prof. Couti will teach FREN 313: Major Literary Works and Artifacts of the Francophone World. We are extremely excited to have her at Rice.
